Evan Fournier sounds off on France's game plan

After three quarters, Franz Wagner and Dennis Schroder had scored more points than the entire French national team combined (47 vs. 46). In the end, both of them finished the game with 26 points each. “When you play them badly, it’s very hard, obviously,” Fournier told Yoann Ohnona from L’Equipe about stopping the two German stars. “You can’t let their two best players score half the points. It’s impossible. When we play, they don’t let the best players express themselves. They were better in their execution, they imposed their style of play, and what they wanted to do on us.”

“I think we lack fundamentals. We have to move on. At times, I think we get it wrong in the way we want to play. And we pay the price for that. These days, the best defense is offense. It’s no longer the game of the 1990s or 2000s where you could defend half-court. Offense is essential,” Fournier said. “Balance on the court, transition game. Especially when you play a team as strong in transition as Germany is.”

French national team head coach Vincent Collet held a press conference after the conclusion of the group stage before the team traveled from Lille to Paris for the playoffs. The veteran specialist singled out Fournier and claimed he was the only one on the roster thinking that way. “Evan Fournier is not [with] the group. This is a regrettable and unacceptable statement for which he bears responsibility. I won’t make any further comments, but I think the group is on board [with the game plan],” he said via Yann Ohnona from L’Equipe.

Jay Scrubb rejoins Boston on an Exhibit 10 deal

Almost one year later, with a return to the floor looming, Jay Scrubb will receive a second chance. “I was the most confident in my career I’ve ever been,” Scrubb remembered. “The success was showing, I tried to let the work take over, getting in the gym twice a day, whether it’s three times a day, doing what I gotta do and sacrificing … it was great. Being around the guys. Being able to compete … I watched Tatum when he was at Duke, I watched Brown when he was at Cal. I watched those guys when they were in college, even in high school, so it was crazy being able to compete. I could definitely feel like they were onto something early on and it was gonna be a really good year.”

“Even though I wasn’t on the deal, I still felt like I was a part of the team, because I was there and the relationships I built and just being there, you still feel like you’re part of the organization,” Scrubb said. “That gave me the motivation to want to get back and be there with those guys … the mental part, being away from the game for the first time just crushed me, I didn’t really know how to feel, but having the support, it really takes over. That really brought me back … it’s tough physically, but the harder you work, the more you build yourself up to better yourself.”

Ben Golliver: In passionate comments, South Sudan’s Luol Deng said referees treated his players differently than Serbia: “It’s a narrative and a stigma that’s out there that African players are aggressive… I don’t know why there’s no African referees in the Olympics. It’s 2024.”
